The idea of Coastal Bend Tooling & Automation originated in the rural mid-west, back in the mid-1980's. A venture to establish a company to provide custom tooling and fixtures to area industries... in a warmer climate than the mid-west offered. The "Lone Star State" quickly became a prime consideration. The larger than life reputation instilled an intrigue with the area, and the slow, but steady recovery of the economy in the state appeared to offer opportunity for an integrator that could help develop solutions to manufacturing challenges presented to industries. Research showed a high potential in South Texas, along the border of Mexico, as area manufacturing was developing quickly, but support was lagging behind considerably. Previously, solutions were developed far from the South Texas area, which presented concerns regarding extensive travel and delayed response. Over several years, visits to Texas cities confirmed that South Texas was an area that could prove to be an ideal location for an integrator to establish itself. The expansion of the Maquiladora* Industry on the Mexico/Texas border was obviously in need of support for tooling, fixtures, and integration. Simply put, there was no help available, locally. In 1988, the founders of Coastal Bend Tooling & Automation selected Corpus Christi as their site for this venture. The city's beauty and proximity to the Gulf of Mexico was a major factor in the selection of this small city. Less than 200 miles from Houston, 140 miles from San Antonio, and 140 miles from Brownsville, McAllen, Laredo, and other Rio Grand Valley cities, it is an ideally central location to serve South Texas, and the Mexico Border!
